Rowan (also known as Mountain Ash) corresponds to the Ogham letter luis (pronounced lweesh). It is a symbol of prtection and defense. The Celtic goddess Brigid is associated with the Rowan tree, which makes perfect sense, as the sabbat Imbolc/Candlemas (Brigid’s day) is celebrated on Feb 2. Brigid is a triple goddess of smithwork, fire and poetry.
All parts of the Rowan tree are used in magick: the leaves, blooms, twigs and berries. That is if you can get the berries before the birds do! They know a good thing, as Rowanberry jam is particularly good as a condiment on roast venison.
Rowan’s planetary association is the sun and corresponds with the element fire. The Rowan is a Druid’s tree and one of the holy trees of the ancient Celtic forests. It is said that faries (fey) adopt Rowan trees and make them a home. For this reason, any type of earth magick worked beneath a Rowan tree (or food made with the berries) are enhaced. Other sabbats that are associated with Rowan trees are Lughnasadh, Beltane and Midsummer. The Irish name for the Rowan tree is Luis.
